I believe they are not illegal....!....Cobra kit cars etc.....
Don't forget though, if you're anticipating putting chassis connectors on, they will have to go underneath these.

I've have just been reading about this, good point.

I like the look of this

Now you might wonder why I ask for side exit....
I think you all know by now that I'm after something better than rear leafs Wink.... and most of the new rear suspenssion systems are tricky with rear exit exhaust.
Unless you go down the 100% custom hand made exhaust.... $$$

I thought about turn down pipes, but not sure about them. fumes, sound... etc.. (MOT, maybe?...)

Custom exhausts aren't necessarily expensive.
If you're doing a full 'head to tailpipe' system in stainless, then yes..........but you could just do mild steel from in front of the rear axle to the tailpipes. That won't be expensive.
You could even do it yourself with pre-bent pipes from Jetex (they do them in stainless now too!)

Turn down pipes that exit under the car are illegal, due to the fact fumes building up under the vehicle when staionary can enter the passenger compartment (although whether they're 'caught' at an MOT is a lottery!).

I 'believed' the law stated that the exhaust had to exit at the extremity of the vehicle at a position behind the rear-most passenger doors.....i.e. at the side or the rear....and then I checked.....

http://www.mclarenautomot...g?page=slr&&num=7

.....so basically, anywhere?!.....well, at least at the side must be legal. Wink

Its why your tailpipe must exit beyond or at the rear bumper [because of monoxide poisoning], but not protrude too far beyond.
But its always open to interpretation. [hopefully]  Grin

Also the exhaust is exiting before the rear seats so if you open your window on a warm day the passengers will get gassed out Smiley

Well I think you're more likely to gas-out people in their cars (if in traffic) rather than your own passengers, the exhaust gasses from my SBF are usually pushed out at quite a rate of knotts!! Not to mention the unsuspecting drivers of other cars getting spattered on by the little bit of moisture and black-soot from a slightly rich mixture when you blip the throttle, just because... Grin

When you're moving forwards the exhaust gasses will be left behind (for the want of a better description) relative to airflow around and over the car, so I doubt you'll have any problems with fumes entering the cabin (unless crawling along in a restricted space, like a garage maybe).

The downside I can see is the noise, not because side-pipes don't sound nice, but because the constant droning would get old very quickly if you use the car on the street. For a weekend bit of fun and a few miles now and then it'd be fantastic. Do a 50 mile motorway journey and you'd be wishing you'd fitted rear-exit tailpipes probably... Great for racers and weekend toys, not great for practical street cars IMHO. But who wants practical? We've all bought classic Mustangs...!!!   Wink Grin

For what it is worth l inherited side exit exhaust system on a Mustang l purchased and l disliked them. The noise was to loud and l was put off from starting the Mustang early mornings or late at night in fear of getting an Asbo. Also the note they make in my opinion is not that great. I would always go for Flowmasters which give you a stonkin sound but you can creep away from the house in the early house without waking the whole street.

I already have a great sound

Here's the issue:
I will probably get the G-bar from TCP early next year, and from what I read, the GT style exhaust might not fit.
I have to do more research on that one....  Undecided
Hence looking for a side exit exhaust, I'm not removing my mufflers.

The kit I saw cost around $50, it's not that expensive Wink so in case it doesn't work.... I'll have to get an exhaust shop to
make something up....

You can always run the exhaust under the rear axle.

MOTing a car in the ages of 65/70 period normal has no restrictions, they dont get checked for CO's either, well mine never does, but i like it done to see the readings to keep an eye on settings.

Two friends of mine have mustangs one 65 with side pipes and 70 shelby with them on it and they have had no trouble's moting.

Last summer while looking for my wifes wedding ring at goodwood i bumped into Alan Mann and sir John Whitmore, i had a chat with him and Allans mechanic! while doing so i had a good look around the 65 coupe they race. It too had side pipe's like that of the set up as the eleneor ones. the box goes to the rear axle hanger then out let comes forward. but i have seen others on ebay for $70.00 per set. Also on the subject of leaf springs, the car had very nicely forged-out spring sets and remained having rear drums. now if this car can get round goodwood in 50 seconds then its pretty well to say any roadgoing mustang is well equiped with this set up!

The mechanic work shop is directly across the carpark to the Topgear location in Dunsfold. The Mechanic remembered seeing my car parked at topgear and so i said i would pop in some day to see his set up. So my advise would be to get in touch with them for info and settings because that carwas going round the track on rails.

How loud are side exit exhausts? One exiting each side, anyone got a video example? Is it a nice dragster type sound or annoying boy racer sound? I like loud

Depends whether you can fit mufflers or not.  Personally I always drive with my window down and side exits either drone or smoke you out. If you go onto Martin Birrane's race video on here, that will give you idea without boxes.
